1. Decide the size of your coop As a general rule of thumb, one chicken needs 3-4 square feet of space of coop. So if you're planning to have 3, then you'll need 12 square foot coop (3ร4, 6ร2, or bigger). However, if you plan to coop them all the time, you need at least 10 feet each. Rustic Coop BackYard Chickens
The coop measures approximately 4'W x 7-1/2'D x 6'H and the run is 8'W x 9'D. I keep the food and water in the run so the coop is nice and dry. I am using the deep litter method and it is working very well. Before I added the pine shavings I lined the coop floor with a rubber-backed rug cut to size.

This coop started its life out as a small dog house. The first step in the building process was to construct a frame that would lift the main structure off the ground. Next, I added a large access door with a small window to the front, and two more hatches on the left side. These hatches allow access to the nest boxes, where the chickens lay.

The coop is 4' x 5' and the run is 6' x 12' (not including the space below the coop). The nesting box is 1' x 2'. When we built the run, we dug down 12" and put the 1/2" hardware cloth all the way down and all the way around the whole coop so something would have a hard time digging in. Hardware cloth is more difficult to get through then chicken wire.
